In 2003, Lambrusco, with its four Registered Designation of Origin types (Sorbara, Grasparossa di Castelvetro, Salamino S.Croce and Reggiano), was guest of honour at PRO WEIN, Düsseldorf, selected by the prestigious MERUM, a leading German wine magazine. PROWEIN is a specialist fair regarded as an event of great commercial significance since it is only open to the trade and international buyers.
Every year, MERUM, directed by Andreas Marz, introduces a new Italian product and, after introducing red southern wines in the past, then wines from Valtellina and in 2002 extra-virgin olive oils from 17 different Italian regions, in 2003 it introduced red Lambrusco wine from Modena and Reggio Emilia.
A tasting area, named "Piazza Merum-Omaggio al Lambrusco", was set up next to the booth hosting some of the leading European wine magazines, right in the middle of the specialist press hall; the tasting area was a success and, as well as giving general information on the vines and features of the four wines, it offered samplings of the best Lambrusco wines in cosy, quiet surroundings, with the aid of professional German-speaking sommeliers.
This promotional campaign that was conducted in Germany was sponsored by PROMEC (a foreign trade agency of the Chamber of Commerce of Modena) and by the two Consorzio del Lambrusco of Modena and Reggio Emilia; communication and public relations were entrusted to the marketing and communication company Mito Group.
During the three 'German' days, the schedule also included an important dinner for about thirty north-European wine journalists at IM SCHIFFCHEN, a three Michelin star restaurant, during which chef Jean-Claude Bourgueil offered a special menu matched with the four Lambrusco wines.
25 companies from Modena and Reggio Emilia took part in the Düsseldorf's fair and only brought Registered Designation of Origin and Regional Geographical Indication wines from the 2000 vintage.
